Decision memo for a hard call
Turn a decision you keep postponing into a one-page memo with a recommendation.
Hiring, pricing, partnerships, or any choice with two or three real options.decisionsstrategywriting
Help me write a decision memo. I keep postponing this decision and I want to make it this week. The decision: <what you need to decide> The options I'm considering: <option A / option B / do nothing> What matters most to me in this decision: <e.g. cash, speed, reputation, learning> What I know: <facts, numbers, constraints> What I don't know: <open questions> Deadline: <when it must be decided> First, ask me up to 3 questions if something critical is missing. Then write a one-page memo: - Context (3 sentences) - Options, each with: what it costs, what it gets me, what it risks, how reversible it is - What would have to be true for each option to be the right one - Recommendation, with the single strongest reason and the single strongest argument against it - What I should do in the first 7 days after deciding Write it plainly, as if to a smart friend. Do not hedge every sentence; commit to a recommendation.
Replace every <placeholder> with your own details before you send it.
How to use it
- 1List the options you are actually considering, including 'do nothing'.
- 2If the model's recommendation surprises you, ask it what would have to be true for the other option to win.
- 3Keep the memo. It is your record of why you decided, which matters more than being right.
