Expense audit: what to cut, keep and renegotiate

Every recurring cost sorted into three piles, with the message to send for each renegotiation.

Audit my recurring expenses. Be a no-nonsense operator.

My recurring costs from the last 3 months (paste from bank/card export): <paste, with amounts and dates>
What I do for a living and what tools I truly depend on: <one paragraph>
Costs I already know I want to keep no matter what: <list>

Do this:
1. Group everything into: Keep (clearly earns its cost), Cut (no clear use), Renegotiate (needed but overpriced or on the wrong plan), Investigate (I can't tell from the data). Put every item in exactly one pile with a one-line reason.
2. Total each pile monthly and annually.
3. For the Renegotiate pile: a short message for each (under 60 words) I can send to ask for a better plan, a discount for annual payment, or a downgrade.
4. Duplicates and overlaps: tools that do the same job.
5. The three items I should decide on today, and the one question to ask myself for each.
6. Anything that looks like a forgotten trial or a price that quietly went up.

Do not invent costs. If an item is unclear, put it in Investigate rather than guessing.

Replace every <placeholder> with your own details before you send it.

How to use it

  1. 1Export the last three months from your bank or card. Don't type from memory; memory forgets the small ones.
  2. 2Cancel the 'cut' pile the same day. Tomorrow you'll rationalise.
  3. 3Ask for the annual total of the cut pile. It's usually more than you expect.
